Basic info on Eastern Serbia – the Timok region

The Timok Region is located in the eastern part of Serbia, bordering Romania in the North and Bulgaria in the East. The Timok Region is situated between Danube and two corridors: Corridor 10 (Serbia) and Corrdor 4 (Bulgaria).

The total area covered is 7.130 km2, which is 8.1% of the whole territory of Serbia. There are two Administrative districts (Bor and Zajecar) and 8 municipalities with 263 settlements. Around 242.000 people live in the Region, which is 3.1% of the total population of Serbia.

Out of eight Municipalities, five of them are border Municipalities: Knjaževac, Zaječar and Negotin border with Bulgaria, while Negotin, Kladovo and Majdanpek border with Romania. The border between Serbia and Romania entirely follows the course of the Danube in this part of the country. The total length of the border is almost 300 km in this Region. The border character of this region considerd for decades as its weakness, is now becomming a visible advantage.

The territory of Eastern Serbia is predominantly hilly-mountainous The arable land covers about 45% of the whole territory. The most developed of agriculture are cattle breeding, sowing land, fruit growing and viniculture. Forests cover about 300.000 hectares, or about 40% of the total territory of Eastern Serbia . It makes 11.3% of the total forest fund in Serbia.

The Timok Region is a region where virgin nature prevails and full of natural potentials:

  • Rivers: the Danube, the Crni Timok and the Beli Timok, the Pek
  • Spas and thermo-mineral waters: Sokobanja, Brestovačka banja, Gamzigradska banja and great potentials in the villages of Nikoličevo and Rgošte
  • Artifical lakes and accumulations of Grlište, Djerdap, Bovan, Rgotina, Sovinac.
  • Mines: copper (Bor and Majdanpek), anthracite, coal ...
  • Protected natural resources: National park “Djerdap”, Nature park “Stara planina”
  • Unpolluted soil, water and air.

Eastern Serbia is a region of many diversities, in the same day, one can:

  • fish or sail on the Danube, relax in one of the spas or enjoy one of ski areas
  • stay on the altitude below the level of the Danube in the Negotin lowland and on 2.169 m on Stara planina.

By its geographic position, the territory of Eastern Serbia belongs to the continental climate zone with pronounced temperature extremes, large differences in the amount of precipitation and unfavourable distributions of precipitation during the year.

Presently, the main industries in Eastern Serbia are the following: production of electrical power, production of copper, agriculture, forestry, wood processing industry. Apart from those, production of clothes and footwear, chemical industry, tourism, civil building, etc, also play an important role.
