Project BIOMIMICRY - Promoting biomimicry-inspired habitat design solutions for biodiversity protection and restoration

The BIOMIMICRY project tackles biodiversity loss and climate risks in the Adriatic-Ionian region by integrating biomimicry into green infrastructure. Through cross-country research, pilot sites, and policy tools, it promotes nature-inspired design for sustainable landscapes, water management, and habitat restoration.

The Challenge
Conventional development has paved over natural spaces, leading to flooding, lost animal migration paths, and damaged ecosystems. Climate change is intensifying these issues, threatening both biodiversity and local economies.

BIOMIMICRY Nature-Inspired Solution
While "green infrastructure" is a known concept, it often lacks the deep intelligence of natural systems. BIOMIMICRY project integrates the practice of emulating nature’s models and strategies—to design solutions that are inherently sustainable, resilient, and regenerative.

The Focus of BIOMIMICRY

  • Research & Development: The project is connecting countries to study local habitats and develop innovative, nature-inspired design strategies.
  • Pilot Projects: BIOMIMICRY will implement site-specific biomimicry solutions in five locations, tackling challenges like pollinator habitats, water management, and wetland restoration.
  • Strategic approach: To undertake feasible measures and accomplish viable results, during the BIOMIMICRY project, a strategic framework for the development of biomimicry-inspired habitat design solutions in rural and urban areas will be formed.
  • Tools & Recognition: Through the Project, interpretation of biomimicry-inspired habitat design solutions in biodiversity conservation will be developed in a form of online biomimicry tool and a ‘biomimicry-inspired’ verification award will be established.

By bridging the gap between green infrastructure and nature's genius, the BIOMIMICRY project is creating a blueprint for a more resilient and biodiverse future.
